#93 - Oscar and I

Just writing to put a stake in the ground on #93 - See every film that has won an award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, or Best Actress.

As of the 2009 Academy Awards (winner: Slumdog Millionaire) there are 222 films that have one of those awards. As of last night with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I am up to 58.

For those scoring at home that is about 26%. And here I thought I was a movie fan. Though of course I realize getting an Academy Award does not guarantee a good movie. That and many, many great movies don't get nominated, much less win (I'm still upset that Mickey Rourke didn't get it for The Wrestler). Plus the awards are full of politics. Also, they've been handing out awards for 80 something years, I've been actively watching movies for only about 25. And not all have been winners - in many senses - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - I'm looking at you.

For trivia and historical purposes, I'm noting that The Last Starfighter (1984) was the first movie I recall seeing in the theater. Where is Lance Guest's award, I ask you? - he destroyed the entire Kodan Armada after all. I don't see Marlon Brando ever doing that.
